My connection to this whimsical dark series is personal and cherished. I discovered these books in a quaint bookstore in a small town near the village where I used to spend my summer holidays. I was around 13 at the time. Those days are stored in my memory as some of the best of my childhood. I would immerse myself in the world of books, often reading under a tree or on the beach, and sketching the characters and scenes in my first sketchbooks. Each visit to the nearby town meant the excitement of adding a new adventure-filled book to my collection.
Years later, while on a long train journey moving countries with my husband and our dog, I watched the Netflix adaptation of the series. The show brought back a nostalgia for my childhood. Inspired by these personal experiences and my deep connection to the series, I decided to create my own versions of the first three book covers, to capture the essence of the Baudelaire siblings – Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – and their relentless enemy, Count Olaf. With this project, I aim to pay homage to the series that has been a part of such fond memories, creating my version of the characters.
In “The Bad Beginning,” we meet the Baudelaire siblings, three intelligent and resourceful children. Suddenly orphaned, they’re introduced to Count Olaf and settle in their new, pretty gloomy home.
The second book, “The Reptile Room,” follows the Baudelaires’ story as they move to the home of a kind, reptile-loving uncle, hoping for a fresh start, but soon discovering that danger and mystery follow them everywhere.
Third book from the series, “The Wide Window,” introduces us and the siblings to Aunt Josephine, an eccentric woman living in a house perched precariously over Lake Lachrymose. There, the Baudelaires face new challenges and unravel more mysteries surrounding their family’s past.
